What is Human Papillomavirus?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent virus that affects humans, known as the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. It impacts countless men and women annually. Indeed, HPV affects men as well.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly every sexually active adult will contract HPV at some stage in their lives. It spreads through skin-to-skin contact, primarily via sexual activity.
How does it become Cervical Cancer?
HPV is responsible for 91% of cervical cancer cases. Nevertheless, not all HPV infections lead to cancer. Only a limited number of the 100+ known HPV strains have carcinogenic potential. Most infections show no symptoms and are naturally resolved by a strong immune system! However, if the immune system is weakened or a potent HPV strain invades, abnormal cell growth can occur, leading to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and potentially, cancer.
Is there a cure?
In short, no. There is no definitive treatment to eradicate HPV or completely reverse damage. However, with regular screenings and informed treatments, outcomes for HPV and cervical cancer are promising.

How can we naturally respond to HPV?
There are numerous natural methods to manage HPV symptoms and complications, such as genital warts and cervical dysplasia. The two most popular treatment options are Cryotherapy and LEEP.Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy employs liquid nitrogen to freeze abnormal cervical cells. It's also used for wart removal, destroying cancerous cells and allowing healthy cells to regenerate. How it works: You lie down as your doctor inserts a speculum, using a cryoprobe to freeze cells. The procedure takes about 5 minutes and may cause a cold sensation or mild cramps.
The result: Cryotherapy is effective in eliminating abnormal cells with low recurrence rates.
Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)
LEEP removes abnormal cervical cells with a small electrical wire loop. How it works: Lying down, your doctor uses a speculum and applies numbing cream. The wire loop removes cells while cauterizing blood vessels to prevent bleeding, taking about 10 minutes.
The result: Highly effective, LEEP typically removes all abnormal cells. A study indicated that LEEP was more effective than cryotherapy.
Other treatments
- Conization, or cone biopsy, removes a cone-shaped tissue section for CIN examination.
- Surgical removal, including electrocautery, laser surgery, and excision.
- Photodynamic therapy, using Aminolevulinic acid, is a novel treatment creating media buzz as a potential โcure to HPVโ. It uses wavelengths to damage HPV-affected cells, posing lower risks for future pregnancies, but requires more research.

Vaccination
An HPV vaccine protects against strains HPV 16 and 18, responsible for genital warts and cervical cancer. It is recommended for females aged 13 to 26 and males aged 13 to 21.While the vaccine offers protection against high-risk strains, it does not cover all HPV types. Thus, routine screenings are advised for vaccinated individuals.
Are new vaccines on the way?
A new immune-based vaccine has been developed, potentially treating women with existing HPV and precancerous cervical changes. This therapeutic vaccine encourages the immune system to target high-risk HPV, potentially eliminating CIN lesions and the infection itself, though more research is necessary to confirm its safety and efficacy.
Natural Methods to Fight HPV
A robust immune system can clear most HPV infections. Lifestyle choices supporting immunity include:- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables โ These are rich in essential vitamins and nutrients and antioxidants, crucial for gut health and immunity, where 70% of our immune system resides.
- Quit smoking โ Smoking increases HPV-related cancer risks. Quitting entirely is most effective.
- Reduce alcohol consumption โ Excessive drinking reduces immune function.
- Drink green tea โ Green tea offers immune benefits and anti-cancer effects, some specific to HPV.
- Exercise regularly โ Improves circulation and detoxifies through sweat.
- Get adequate sleep โ 7-8 hours of quality sleep regulate bodily functions and infection resistance.
- Maintain a positive mindset โ Reduces stress, enhancing immune strength.
- Supplement your diet โ Papillex is designed to support immunity against HPV for both men and women.
Could Medicinal Mushrooms be the Cure?
New research on shiitake mushrooms, particularly Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC), shows promise in eradicating persistent HPV infections. Dr. Judith A. Smith conducted trials indicating daily intake of 1-3 grams of AHCC eradicated the virus in 44-66.7% of high-risk HPV patients within 3-7 months.Medicinal mushrooms have long supported immune health and combat viral infections.
